November 1, 2013 – Toronto, Ontario.

We are one week away from the 24th Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians, which for the first time in 70 years will take place in Toronto.  Organizers are preparing the Marriott Airport Hotel venue on Dixon Road for an engaging weekend of ideas, dialogue and decision-making.

We are pleased to announce the participation of Canada’s Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister for Multiculturalism, the Hon. Jason Kenney, Leader of the Official Opposition, the Hon. Thomas Mulcair and Justin Trudeau, MP Leader of the Federal Liberal Party.  All have confirmed their attendance at our official opening ceremony Friday, November 8th at 7PM.

This gathering is taking place as celebrations intersect with concerns for Ukrainian Canadians.  This year is the 100th birthday of a Ukrainian son who became Canada’s acknowledged father of multiculturalism- the late Senator Paul Yuzyk.  Last Friday, a postage stamp was issued to honour his accomplishments.  We will also be gathering in solemn remembrance for the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor genocide and to discuss its rightful and permanent placement among the prominent exhibits at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights.

Other congress participants include Canadian Ambassador of Religious Freedom Andrew Bennett, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Canada- Vadym Prystaiko and the Rector of Kyiv Mohyla Academy- Serhiy Kvit.  Topics for discussion will include: Ukrainian arts and culture, the conservation of our language and the building of understanding among Canadians of all backgrounds.  We will also examine the situation inside and the outlook for Ukraine- one year after its parliamentary elections, as it teeters on the doorstep of European union.

“We are excited to have an excellent lineup of speakers, delegates from across our country and to be part of this Toronto welcome,” stated UCC national president, Paul Grod.  “Ukrainians in Canada will be adding to an already thriving vision, giving our leadership a mandate for the future of our community.”

The XXIV UCC Congress information and registration package is available onlinewww.ucc.ca.  Accredited media should register no later than November 8th by contacting the event’s media relations director- Steve Andrusiak.
