The 25th annual BC Ukrainian Cultural Festival is set to go on May 2 in Mission, BC.

Mission Festival BC

The Festival will take place at the Heritage Park Educational & Cultural Complex in that Fraser Valley community.

The Festival was begun 25 years ago by cultural icon Gladys Andreas and her late husband, Albert Andreas, who remains actively involved, has been recognized by both the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Government of Ukraine for her efforts in preserving and enhancing Ukrainian culture in BC.

The Festival will offer musical entertainment throughout the venue, a kitchen providing tasty Ukrainian cuisine (perogies, cabbage rolls, etc.), displays of Ukrainian arts and crafts, vendors, a play area for the
little ones, and more.

Three hundred dancers in troupes from all areas of the province will be performing adjudicated dances from numerous regions of Ukraine.

The performances take place in the complex’s ultra-modern Clarke
Theatre, 33700 Prentice Ave, Mission.

The Opening Ceremony will take place at 10 AM.

On view will be “The Hopak,” the National Dance of Ukraine. No country has a national dance as vibrant and energetic and fast-moving and colourful. Scheduled for 6 PM, it features each troupe’s best performers.

The “Previt,” or Welcome Dance, is the most spiritually significant and culturally relevant of all Ukrainian dances. Scheduled for 2 PM, the Previt often features all the performers in the entire troupe, from the beginners to the oldest, garbed in a wide variety of costumes.
